New Domain Name Launch for Wales
The Welsh online community are proud of their cultural heritage and there is no more potent method of expressing your ties to Wales in your online activities than by registering a domain name that is uniquely Welsh to your business or organisation.
Businesses in Wales will soon be able to join the Scottish and Londoners in being able to identify their online activities with their location of origin. Businesses throughout Wales will soon be able to register .wales and .cymru domain names to reinforce their cultural heritage and links to their home country.
Registering a .wales or .cymru domain name provides an authenticity to any online Welsh business that provides confidence in potential customers that they are buying from a genuine Welsh organisation. .wales and .cymru domain names will also help cultural organisations, charities, local authorities and attractions to make their Welsh roots a prominent feature of their online presence.
Get your .wales or .cymru Domain Names
Nominet are launching the .wales and .cymru domain names for businesses and individuals in Wales between September 2014 and March 2015. The process will be staggered to allow a smooth introduction of the new domain names and to ensure that the right people get the right domain name.
September 1st to October 31st 2014:Businesses with a trademark registered with ICANN will be able to apply for .wales and .cymru domain names.
November 3rd to December 24th 2014:Individuals and businesses who trade in Wales will be able to apply. Decisions will take place for the 'contention set*' to establish the ownership of names with more than one ownership claim.
December 24th 2014 to February 25th 2015 :Auctions take place for the contention set who have valid claims over a single domain name. Applications will be submitted for domains without the requirement of eligibility.
February 26th 2015 :Domain names in the contention set will go to auction.
March 1st 2015 :General availability. Any individual or business can apply for a .wales or .cymru domain name on a first come first served basis.
*Contention sets are groups of applications containing identical or similar applied-for gTLD strings. Contention sets are identified during Initial Evaluation, following review of all applied-for gTLD strings.
